The Jane Fonda Center at Emory University, a member of the Start Strong Learning Community, is the lead organization for Start Strong Atlanta working with the Atlanta Public School District and Grady Health System Teen Services Program as primary partners. As part of this four-year initiative, Start Strong Atlanta will be implementing the Start Strong model by:
- Implementing Safe Dates, a healthy relationships curriculum, into the Atlanta Public School District's 15 middle schools.
- Collaborating with the Metropolitan Atlanta Violence Prevention Partnership (over 160 individuals and agencies) and six other committed partners to date, build social capital in the Atlanta community to help youth develop healthy teen relationships through social networking strategies and educational capacity building.
- Partnering with The Rock of Escape Youth Development Organization on a community engagement project in the Villages of Carver, an urban –mixed community with one of the highest rates of intimate partner violence and over all violence in the city of Atlanta.
- Working with a core group of youth leaders, create and maintain “KeepItStrongATL”, a youth –focused website giving young people a voice and a place they can blog, post comments, and engage in discussions on building healthy relationships and preventing teen dating violence.
- Having support from philanthropist and actor, Jane Fonda, who speaks to the public health issue of teen dating violence and the importance of the work of Start Strong
BY THE NUMBER
- A 2009 Georgia report indicates that 1 out of every 6 Georgia high school students was hit, slapped or physically hurt on purpose by their boyfriend or girlfriend
- Start Strong Atlanta aims to reach up to 10,000 youth in the Atlanta area
