BOSTON

The Boston Public Health Commission, a member of the Start Strong Learning Community, is the lead organization for Start Strong Boston. As part of this four-year initiative, Start Strong Boston will be implementing the Start Strong model by:
- Implementing Fourth R, a healthy relationships curriculum, into health classes and developing a new after-school curriculum taught by older teen peers and mentors
- Conducting workshops at schools, hospitals, and police departments to educate community members on the components of healthy dating relationships
- Establishing a series of "Family Fun Events" at the community centers to bring young people and families together to interactively practice what they have learned through the initiative
- Addressing girl gang sexual and physical violence and cyber bullying as part of the overall prevention program
BY THE NUMBER
- Dorchester and Roxbury, the target “micro-neighborhoods,” make up only 25% of Boston's population, yet account for 38% of the city's reported intimate partner violence
- The target population for this project will be two to five Boston public middle schools, reaching approximately 1,000-1,500 students ages 10-14
- 10-20 community-based workshops will be held per year addressing healthy relationships and offering materials on how to identify violent teen behaviors
