BRONX
Bronx-Lebanon Hospital Center, a member of the Start Strong Learning Community, is the lead organization for Start Strong Bronx. As part of this four-year initiative, Start Strong Bronx will be implementing the Start Strong model by:
- Implementing Fourth R, a healthy relationships curriculum, and workshops on teen health topics in four South Bronx middle schools and one afterschool program
- Launching Men of Strength Training (MOST) clubs for coaches and athletes in at least four middle schools and/or afterschool programs
- Providing healthy relationships and child health workshops and support groups to 75 parents each year
- Creating a Teen Advisory Board comprised of 15 high school students, withtwo members elected to be on a monthly Leadership Steering Committee. Board will learn three art-based practical skills each year, resulting in outreach pieces for middle school students (i.e. urban manga comic book).
- Training up to 70 pediatricians and residents on screening and treating intimate partner violence each year
- Tailoring Start Strong Bronx’s prevention activities to the needs of the population and including lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) partner violence in our discussions and prevention efforts
BY THE NUMBER
- The Bronx borough has the highest intimate partner homicide rates in New York City
- Start Strong Bronx aims to reach about 2,000 Bronx middle school students in classrooms, assembly programs, and special events annually
- 400 students in 7th and 8th grade will participate in an interactive theater event, “Texting for Life,” at Bronx schools and Pregones Theater in October 2009 for Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

Bryanna Mason became involved with Start Strong Bronx because "I am almost at that stage where I will have a relationship, and I want to be able to know whether I'm in a bad relationship, and to help prevent it with my family and friends. . I also want to know what healthy relationship is."

Xavier McGarrity joined Start Strong Bronx because he is interested in understanding and sharing with his peers what a healthy relationship is and how to stop a teen from being abused.
