Peace Over Violence, a member of the Start Strong Learning Community, is the lead organization for Start Strong Los Angeles. As part of this four-year initiative, Start Strong Los Angeles will be implementing the Start Strong model by:
- Introducing Safe Dates, a healthy relationships curriculum, into two middle schools in metropolitan Los Angeles as well as providing In Touch With Teens education in school and community settings
- Engaging community members and older teens through community mobilization and activism activities
- Working with Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) and the Mayor’s office staff to extend teen dating violence and prevention policies in Los Angeles schools and to adopt a district-wide policy
- Engaging youth in the development of new approaches to teen dating violence prevention through a media campaign with internet forums, social networking websites and digital storytelling
*Peace Over Violence is being funded by Blue Shield of California Foundation.
BY THE NUMBER
- According to a recent survey in Los Angeles schools, 7.3% of students responded that they had experienced physical violence with a boy/girlfriend and 7.1% of females had experienced sexual abuse
- Peace Over Violence aims to impact 4,300 students (age 11-14) at 2 middle schools
- Of these students, 90% are Latino and 85% very low income and chronically exposed to violence
