START STRONG SITES TO CELEBRATE DENIM DAY ON APRIL 21
April is Sexual Violence Awareness Month. This year Start Strong Los Angeles and Start Strong Bronx are teaming up to take a stand for healthier, violence-free relationships by hosting Denim Day events from coast to coast on Wednesday, April 21.
Established by Peace Over Violence 11 years ago, Denim Day is a sexual violence prevention and education campaign that has reached millions with its message that “there is no excuse and never an invitation to rape.”
As part of their annual Denim Day activities, Peace Over Violence and Start Strong Los Angeles are looking to reach their goal of 1 million participants and are asking supporters to wear denim. Supporters are encouraged to register at www.denimdayinla.org even if you don’t live in Los Angeles), download flyers and posters or purchase some along with buttons, pencils, water bottles, etc., to share with your friends/colleagues.
Start Strong Bronx is joining Start Strong Los Angeles to host their first citywide Denim Day event against Sexual and Dating Violence. The Start Strong Bronx Teen Advisory Board, students from the High School of Visual Arts, the Bronx Borough President, Mariska Hargitay's Joyful Heart Foundation and the NYC Alliance Against Sexual Assault, along with Start Strong Bronx partner agencies, will be gathering on the steps of the Bronx Supreme Courthouse with the City Council to announce Denim Day. Everyone will be wearing jeans and City Council Speaker Christine Quinn will make a Denim Day proclamation.
It is important that we all stand up for a society free from violence and abuse. We hope you will participate in Denim Day by wearing your favorite pair of denim on April 21!
